Why Is My Dryer Not Drying Clothes? 9 Causes and Fixes

When clothes come out damp, the problem is usually airflow, not heat. A blocked vent is also the leading factor in dryer fires, so it is worth checking today.

Quick answer

Most dryers that stop drying have restricted airflow: a clogged lint screen, a crushed or lint-packed vent hose, or a blocked outdoor vent flap. Clean those first. If the drum turns but there is no heat at all, an electric dryer may have a half-tripped breaker, a blown thermal fuse or a failed heating element; a gas dryer may have a bad igniter or gas valve coil.

A clothes dryer works by pulling room air across a heater, tumbling it through wet clothes, and pushing the warm, moist air out through a vent. Heat alone does not dry clothes; moving air does. Block the exhaust and the moisture has nowhere to go, the drum just gets hot, and the dryer runs longer and longer.

That is also why airflow matters for safety. The U.S. Fire Administration estimates about 2,900 clothes dryer fires in homes each year, and “failure to clean” is the leading factor, at 34 percent.

Airflow through a clothes dryer and its vent Room air is drawn into the dryer, heated, passed through the tumbling clothes and the lint screen, and pushed out through the vent duct to a flap on the outside wall. Lint buildup in the screen, duct or flap restricts the flow. Dryer Air in, heated, through clothes Vent duct: keep it short and rigid Lint collects in dips and bends Outside wall flap must open
Plate 1Every bend, sag and extra foot of duct slows the air. A clogged outdoor flap can stop it almost entirely.

Check these first

  1. Clean the lint screen.Safe check

Pull it out and remove the lint. If water beads on the mesh when you rinse it, dryer sheet residue is clogging it; scrub it with warm soapy water and let it dry.

  2. Feel the airflow outside.Safe check

Run the dryer and go to the vent hood on the outside wall. You should feel strong, warm air and see the flap open. Weak air means a blockage somewhere along the duct.

  3. Inspect the duct behind the dryer.Safe check

Unplug the dryer (and close the gas valve on a gas model) before pulling it out. Look for a crushed, kinked or lint-packed duct. Replace plastic or foil accordion duct with rigid or semi-rigid metal.

  4. Clean the vent run.Take care

Disconnect the duct and use a dryer vent brush kit to clear it, or hire a vent cleaning service for long or roof-mounted runs.

  5. Do not overload.Safe check

Clothes need room to tumble. A packed drum dries slowly and unevenly.

  6. Check the washer’s spin.Safe check

If clothes come out of the washer dripping, the dryer has far more water to remove. Make sure the washer drains and spins properly.

If there is no heat at all

Symptom Electric dryer Gas dryer
Drum turns, completely cold One half of the double breaker tripped; blown thermal fuse; failed heating element Failed igniter or gas valve coils; gas supply off
Heats briefly, then cold Cycling thermostat or high-limit thermostat failing Gas valve coils weakening
Stops early, clothes damp Moisture sensor bars coated with residue Same
Does not start at all Door switch, thermal fuse, start switch Same

The double breaker trap: electric dryers run on 240 volts through a two-pole breaker. If only one half trips, the 120-volt motor can still turn the drum, but the heater needs both halves. Switch the breaker fully off, then back on.

A thermal fuse usually blows because the dryer overheated, often from a blocked vent. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent means it will blow again, or worse.

Gas dryers: leave internal repairs to a professional. Igniter and gas valve work involves the gas supply. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your utility from outside.

How much is a slow dryer costing you?

An electric dryer draws around 3,000 watts or more while heating. A load that takes two cycles instead of one doubles the cost and the wear. Our appliance energy cost calculator shows what that adds up to at your electricity rate.

Bottom lineClean the lint screen, then check airflow at the outside vent and clear the duct. No heat at all on an electric dryer: reset the double breaker before calling a technician.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean my dryer vent?

Clean the lint screen before or after every load. Have the vent duct cleaned at least once a year, and more often if drying times creep up or you have a long vent run.

Why does my dryer spin but not heat?

On electric dryers, check the breaker first: they use a double breaker, and if one half trips, the drum can still turn while the heater stays off. Otherwise a thermal fuse, heating element or thermostat has likely failed. Gas dryers commonly fail at the igniter or gas valve coils.

Can I use a plastic or foil accordion vent?

Fire safety agencies and dryer manufacturers recommend rigid or semi-rigid metal duct. Plastic and thin foil accordion ducts sag, trap lint and can crush, and many manufacturers do not allow plastic.

Is it normal for my dryer to stop early with clothes still damp?

Dryers with moisture sensors can stop early if the sensor bars are coated with fabric softener residue. Wipe the metal bars inside the drum with rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth.
