About Household Atlas
An independent reference for the machines and systems you live with every day, written for the moment something stops working the way it should.
What we do
Every home runs on the same handful of systems: heating and cooling, water, electricity, the appliances in the kitchen and laundry room, and the air itself. Most of the time you never think about them. Then the AC ices over, the smoke alarm chirps at 3 a.m., or the windows start streaming every morning, and you need a clear answer quickly.
Household Atlas exists for that moment. Each guide starts with the short answer, explains what is actually going on, separates the checks you can safely do yourself from the jobs that belong to a licensed professional, and lists the sources behind every number.
What we cover
- Heating & cooling: air conditioners, furnaces, heat pumps and thermostats.
- Water & plumbing: water heaters, toilets, faucets and drains.
- Kitchen appliances: refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens and microwaves.
- Laundry: washing machines and dryers.
- Electricity & energy: running costs, breakers and smoke and CO alarms.
- Air & moisture: humidity, condensation and indoor air.
We also build free calculators for questions that deserve a number rather than a rule of thumb.
Who writes the guides
Guides are published under the Household Atlas Editors byline. They are researched from manufacturers’ documentation and public agencies such as the U.S. Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR and the EPA, and checked against those sources before publication. Our editorial policy explains the process in detail, including how we use software tools and how we handle corrections.
We are not a repair company, a retailer or a utility, and we do not sell services. When a job needs a professional, we say so plainly.
How we are funded
Household Atlas is free to read and is supported by display advertising. Advertisers have no say in what we write, and ads are labeled and kept out of the way of the answers. If we ever add affiliate links, they will be disclosed on the page where they appear.
